Timing of Surgical Resection in High-grade Sarcomas After Neoadjuvant Radiation Therapy Doesn’t Impact Outcomes

The timing of surgical resection after external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) in patients with high-grade soft tissue and retroperitoneal sarcomas does not impact oncologic outcomes, according to a study published in the Journal of Surgical Research.

In this retrospective cohort study, 146 patients with high-grade sarcoma who completed neoadjuvant EBRT and resection, were included. Overall recurrence occurred in 37% of patients and local recurrence in 14.4%. The authors noted that time to surgery did not affect recurrence (P = 0.82) or survival (P = 0.88).

In patients who underwent resection >6 weeks after EBRT, the risk for all complications were higher.
